Feb '12: Honoring a Legacy and a Vision for the Future

Dr. Bondoc

February 5th marks the Anniversary commemorating the life of Conrado C. Bondoc, MD. He was a master surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a pioneer in burn surgery. He treated many renowned burn victims including J.W. (Bill) Marriott, CEO of the Marriott Hotel chain, and Sumner Redstone, owner of the CBS Corporation, Viacom, MTV Networks, BET, and the film studio Paramount Pictures. Dr. Bondoc developed the first Frozen Skin Bank in the '70s, supported the development of artificial skin at MIT, and worked with Colonel Basil A. Pruitt (US Army Retired) at the Brooks Army Medical Center Burn Center in San Antonio Texas. Gemini President Victoria Bondoc is honoring her father's legacy and the sacrifice of our military forces through a contribution to the US Army’s Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center.

Over the years, new technology and treatment have improved prospects for our service members. In the past, a service member 15 to 40 years old who had a 43% burn had a 50–50 chance of survival. Today, that same person with an 83% burn has more than 50% chance. In the last 9 years, the Burn Center has treated more than 900 military personnel injured in overseas contingency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the initiation of U.S. military operations in Iraq, the Flight Team has completed more than 90 overseas flight missions, transporting over 350 burn and trauma casualties from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany to the Brooks Army Medical Center for definitive care.

"As a child, I saw firsthand how easily a burn injury can claim a life and the suffering endured over a long period of recovery." said Gemini President Victoria Bondoc. "Our military personnel risk their lives to protect our freedom. They deserve advanced technology, the best resources, and the latest treatment that medical science offers. The efforts at Brooks must continue until we can save all victims and minimize their pain."

The West Potomac Wolverine offensive linemen ranks among the more decorated players in the state of Virginia and the 6-foot-3, 304-pounder was hotly recruited by a number of DI, DI-AA and Division II schools before making his commitment to the University of Maine, College of Engineering, with a full athletic scholarship. Daniel has also been informed he will be a traveling red-shirt freshman.

Carrying a 3.8 grade point average, Maine is not only getting a good ball player but also an outstanding student who West Potomac Head Coach Eric Henderson describes as a "throwback kind of kid who is very down-to-Earth and team-oriented."

In finishing 6-4 this past season, the West Potomac offense proved to be among the most explosive in the state averaging 34.7 points per game with Carriker leading the way.

"He's the entire package," says West Potomac Head Coach Eric Henderson, "he was bending kids backwards all season."

A combination of power and speed, Carriker clocks a 5.1 forty and benches 370 pounds making him capable of causing a lot of havoc on the line of scrimmage and beyond either drive-blocking or pulling.

A three-year starter for the Wolverines, Carriker has been a stalwart for the program and first gained recruiting attention in the summer of 2009 after being awarded the Top Offensive Lineman Award by Larry Beightol, a former college and NFL O-line coach, at a Football University event in Annapolis.
